Willoughby Spring Fair 2007

Saturday 15 September

This year's Willoughby Spring Fair was the last hurrah for the event in its current configuration and location. With the Civic Centre and surrounding commercial buildings set to be vacated in October and demolished shortly after, the Victoria Road location used to house the event will be unusable from 2008 until the redevelopment is completed.

Macquarie Community College is currently located in one of the buildings earmarked for demolishion, and as a result will be relocating to Thomas Street Chatswood in early October.

The move to Thomas Street will also coincide with a rebranding of Macquarie Community College Chatswood to Macquarie Business Training Centre, Chatswood (MBTC).

The marketing team at Macquarie decided to leverage the Willoughby Spring Fair as an opportunity to build awareness of not only the relocation of Macquarie Community College, but also of the new name and vision of MBTC Chatswood.

Overall the event was a success with many passers-by and past students voicing their enthusiasm in relation to the new direction of the business, and the prospect of state-of-the-art new training facilities catering for individual and corporate training.

A Taste of Asia Cookbook Launch 2007

Wednesday 25 July

Students who enrolled in Event Management and Computers for ESL were set the task of creating a multi-lingual cookbook that allows readers to experience a taste of Asia. Many students found translating words from their language a challenge as in many instances no direct translation exists. Despite this, the students worked hard whilst deriving much joy from the creative process.

After months of research and testing of ingredients and recipes the students launched their cookbook, 'A Taste of Eastern Asia' at Macquarie Community College, Carlingford. To complement the launch, students provided samples of the dishes featured in their cookbook, to the widespread acclaim of the taste-testers present.

Containing 18 recipes from Japan, South Korea, North China, South China and Thailand, 'A Taste of Asia' is available for perusal at Macquarie Community College, Carlingford (MBTC building).

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) 2007

Saturday 2 June

Rotary Model United Nations Assemby (MUNA) is a concept which arose as a result of the aspirations of youth wanting to address the same issues as the United Nations Assembly. It is an opportunity for young people to succeed where their adult counterparts in the United Nations have failed in discussing and resolving topics beneficial to world peace and betterment in manner that is respectful to others of different race, religion and nationality to themselves.

This year's event for District 9680 was sponsored by Macquarie Community College through George Papallo (CEO of Macquarie Community College) and his involvement in the community as a Rotarian. As a result of George's association, the College donated 150 leather-look compendiums to each of the participants in the Assembly, which were very warmly received.

Overall, the event was an unequivocal success with everyone already looking ahead to next year's event.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea 2007

Wednesday 23 May

English language students from Macquarie Community College at Carlingford and North Ryde put their newly acquired event management skills to the test last Wednesday by holding a fundraising morning tea for charity.

As a component of the College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, students are required to coordinate the running of a chosen event. Since many of the students have witnessed first hand the devastating effects of cancer on people close to them, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – a Cancer Council initiative held annually since 1994 – seemed fitting.

More than 60 students, staff and teachers at Carlingford and North Ryde campuses made donations which helped to raise more than $260. The proceeds of the morning tea will contribute to cancer research and support services for patients and their families.
