Dressmaking – Basic & Intermediate- Sydney Course

The dressmaking course is designed for beginner and intermediate sewers who want to learn how to fit and sew a commercial pattern. It is ideal for students undertaking the HSC who would like to learn sewing skills that can be applied to their major work.

This course is also designed for advanced sewers who want to learn how to fit and sew a more complex commercial pattern. Suggested garments that students would undertake include a shirt with a collar and sleeves, a dress with sleeves, or tailored pants with pockets.

Course Outline

Topics include:

• Quality equipment selection
• Haberdashery requirements for sewing
• Appropriate fabric selection
• Pattern styles for figure types
• What correct garment fit entails
• Interpretation of pattern envelope information
• Taking body measurements and determining basic pattern making alterations for personal fit
• Understanding pattern instructions on the paper pattern and the instruction leaflet
• Fabric pre-shrinking, layout and pattern making/cutting
• Machine treading and bobbin winding
• Basic sewing techniques

Course Outcome

The ability to confidently achieve professional dressmaking fit and finishes to a garment.

What to Bring

• A commercial pattern (a simple garment or beginners).
• Fabric that has been washed in the way you intend to clean the finished garment. This pre shrinks the fabric.
• Matching thread.
• Any sewing equipment you already own
• Paper scissors.
• Pen and notebook.

Delivery Mode

The course is delivered in a workroom with sewing machines and overlockers provided.
