This beginners course is a super easy and fun project for any crocheter. It will introduce you to the crochet methodology and take you from basics to learning tips and various simple stitches.  Modifications will be provided for those who want to make it more challenging. Each participant is provided with the opportunity to learn a new crochet technique and use this technique to make a project at home. The course notes include detailed instructions, patterns and various other tips to help participants achieve their goals. The course is aimed as a teaching module and the patterns are demonstrated in class. Project suggestions are provided so students feel free to attempt small or large projects in their own time.

The course is designed for complete beginners. You don't need any experience - just an open mind to have fun learning a new skill!

We offer training in face to face and/or online learning formats.

Course Outline

  • Work out the right crochet hook to suit your style  
  • How to properly hold the crochet hook and yarn 
  • How to start with a chain 
  • Introduction to the basic crochet stitches
  • Get the tension right
  • Learn to build upon your stitches using tips and tricks for strength and stability
  • Learn how to read and interpret a simple pattern 
  • How to change colours on a project
  • Design the perfect size bag to suit your purpose
  • Attach handles (long or short)
  • Learn an easy project using basic beginner crochet skills 
  • Learn how to conceptualise a project using stitches and shapes 
  • Learn to finish your project for sustainability and long term use

Course Outcome

By the end of this crochet course, you will know: 

  • How to make a chain
  • The basic crochet stitches 
  • How to control your tension so you can achieve better fabric  
  • How to read crochet diagrams 
  • How to read patterns

Please note: Individuals learn at different paces, and outcomes may vary depending on the level of practise between session.

Prerequisite

  • This course is designed for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of the craft. This course is also suitable for those who have acquired some knowledge of crochet and would like to revise and further their skills.

Important Information

  • Tutor will provide materials (including yarn and hooks) - value $20. This is included in the course fee.
  • For on-campus classes only: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your first lesson only.
