Buttercream Cake Decorating Course – Sydney Course

The use of buttercream has increased in popularity among cake decorating professionals and enthusiasts. You can learn how to create amazing birthday cakes, cupcakes and formal style cakes using buttercream in this hands-on short course.

Over 3 sessions, you will learn to pipe buttercream in a variety of styles and techniques. In particular, you will learn to create a beautiful semi-naked cake, create and apply flowers to your cake and how to make a beautiful cupcake bouquet using cupcakes that have been piped with different piping techniques. This cupcake bouquet makes a wonderful gift and always wows family and friends at parties!

By the end of this course you will feel confident to use buttercream in a variety of piping techniques and styles to decorate cakes. You will know how to create different buttercream colours, how to make the texture consistent, how to level and decorate a cake.

Course Outline

In this course, you will learn:

  • how to pipe a variety of styles and techniques using buttercream
  • the differences in buttercreams and icings
  • a variety of piping techniques
  • how to colour buttercream
  • how to ensure your buttercream has a consistent texture
  • how to level and tort a cake
  • how to safely use fresh flowers and vegetation on cakes
  • how to create a beautiful semi-naked cake
  • how to safely apply piped flowers to your cake
  • how to make a beautiful cupcake bouquet using cupcakes that have been piped with different piping techniques

Course Outcome

By the end of this course you will feel confident to use buttercream in a variety of piping techniques and styles to decorate cakes. You will know how to create different buttercream colours, how to make the texture consistent, how to level and decorate a cake. You will have decorated a semi-naked cake and created a cupcake bouquet.

What to bring

Please bring the following items to each class.

  • Apron
  • Tea towel
  • Small plastic container (this is for the corn flour pouch) – first class only
  • Cleaning Items: e.g. Chux, cleaning cloth or baby wipes
  • Freezer / sandwich bags
  • Pen and paper
  • Tissue Box or roll of paper towel or serviettes.
