Calligraphy - Cadels (Decorative Gothic Initials) - Sydney Course

We offer training in face to face and/or online learning formats.

  • Please see scheduled class for delivery format.
  • Online classes delivered via livestream video over Zoom.

Cadels are highly decorative cursive Gothic capital letters that are built up with many layered strokes using a chisel edge nib. Cadels can include embellishments with cross hatch patterns, diamond dots and fine decorative elements of design. The most well-known historic examples are found in 15th & 16th century Gothic manuscripts.

It’s fun to create colourful Cadels to embellish gifts, greeting cards, calligraphic artworks & ephemeral craft projects.

By the end of this course, you will know how to use dip pens and cartridge pens with acrylic inks, how to layer parallel multi-strokes using a chisel edge nib, how to maintain a 45 degree pen angle, how to draw Gothic majuscule letter shapes and much more!

This course is suitable for beginners.
