Calligraphy for the Festive Season – Sydney Course
This is a great time of year to learn calligraphy. Using a chisel-shaped pen, you will learn to write an attractive modern version of the ancient Uncial script. You will then be able to make a variety of hand-lettered cards, bookmarks and other gifts. This workshop will show you how to combine the script with these projects. This workshop is designed especially for beginners – but is also suitable those wishing to refresh their skills. Materials cost $15 – payable to tutor.
Course Outline
- Introduction to the Uncial script, historical background and relationship to modern scripts.
- Learn to use a square-edged calligraphy nib and then to write the Uncial alphabet.
- Put these skills into practice by using a letter repetition design to make a card
- Explore nib and line relationship
- Develop an understanding of inter-word and interlinear spacing and combine these skills in a practical project
- Experiment with ways of combining the decorated initials of the period with the script.
- Learn basic layout and design principles. Apply these skills in practical projects.
- Discuss how the skills learnt can be used for individual purposes
Course Outcome
- By the end of this course you will be able to write an Uncial script and create a variety of layouts and designs, suitable for the season, to produce projects incorporating these skills.
