You will require adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills in English that allow you to read and interpret information, understand training, follow clear instructions, and prepare written assignments and documents for assessment.

Study Load

The time required to complete the Certificate III in Individual Support will depend on the level of experience that students have prior to the course and the nominal hours of self-paced study they complete. Students with limited or no experience in this industry require face to face training and work placement. Face to face classes are generally scheduled over approximately 270 hours and have additional self-paced study hours set for them by MCC. They are also required to complete 120 hours of work placement.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Vocational training gives you a nationally recognised qualification that formally verifies your competency in key work skills. Competency is most commonly achieved through learning with our trainers; however, if you believe you are already competent in some of the skills required for your qualification, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). MCC recognises prior skills and knowledge gained through previous studies and work experience. If you would like to apply for RPL, please contact us for an RPL kit. MCC recognises the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) qualifications and statements of attainment from any other RTO or TAFE.

Career Opportunities

The Certificate III in Individual Support is recognised as the entry level requirement to work in residential aged care as well as other caring roles. Aged Care Workers, Assistants in Nursing and Personal Care Assistants are required by many facilities to have, or be working towards, this qualification. With an aging population, demand for aged care workers is expected to remain very strong over the coming years.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment is undertaken in the classroom, through role plays, group activities and practical skills activities, and in your work placement. A number of practical and theoretical tasks will be provided for each unit and competency will be based on the completion of these tasks.

Work Placement

* Completion of 120 hours in a care service facility is mandatory as per the training package.
  • MCC also offers a simulated learning environment to assist in meeting the unit of competency requirements.
  • Before commencing work placement, you will be required to get a current national criminal record check to allow you to work in a care service facility. MCC will assist you with this application process.
  • Suitable work placement clothing is required ie black pants, white polo shirt and leather or leather-like fully enclosed shoes with non slip soles.
