Writing for Children – Sydney Course

In this short course you will learn about the word lengths, genres, formats and markets for short stories, poems, picture books and chapter books written for children in today’s competitive publishing world.

The Writing for Children course will allow you to workshop your writing in an interactive group environment. You will learn how to storyboard a picture book as well as plot a chapter book and understand the elements of a short story.

Course Outline

You will:

  • Learn how to write a query letter
  • Workshop your writing with the group

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, students will understand how to write, edit and submit a short story/poem/picture book for publication.

Prerequisite

A proficiency in written English is essential for this Writing for Children course.

No prior writing experience is neccessary. This course is also suitable for people who have completed an introductory creative writing course.

The course will include a variety of writing exercises, group discussions, and handouts.
