Although focused on nonfiction and creative nonfiction, these sentence-styling strategies can nonetheless be applied to any narrative, including fiction.

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • write in a clear, concise, and engaging style, by embracing simple sentences and avoiding common writing blunders
  • shape sophisticated conjunction-rich and phrase-filled sentences
  • wield advanced writing techniques, such as tuning a verb’s voice and applying rhetorical devices, to attract an audience
  • master the main sentence patterns and correctly use punctuation marks ( colons, semicolons, hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes )
  • structure an essay, feature, article, book, e-book, or manuscript, by including an appealing hook and an unexpected ending ( bookend )
  • edit writing for clarity, brevity, and simplicity

Prerequisite

This is not a fundamentals course. It is suitable for students who have a good knowledge of grammar. Students should understand the different types of phrase, clause and sentence and the different parts of speech.
