English for Work and Study – Computer Beginners – Sydney Course

This English for Work and Study – Computer Beginners course will assist you with learning strategies, workplace reading and writing, numeracy, oral communication digital literacy and operating a personal computer. Join the class for a fun and interactive experience whilst learning key skills. This course is suitable for people who are at the beginners level and are looking to learn the basics of computing for work and study purposes.

Course Outline

In this course, you will learn how to:

  • Use basic strategies for work related learning
  • Read basic workplace information
  • Write basic workplace information
  • Engage in basic spoken exchanges at work
  • Use digital technology for basic workplace tasks
  • Use whole numbers and money up to the number ‘1000’ for work purposes
  • Locate, recognise and compare highly familiar measurements for work
  • Read and respond to basic workplace instructions
  • Read and respond to basic workplace signs and symbols
  • Write basic workplace formatted texts
  • Operate a personal computer

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, you will be familiar with reading, writing and using numbers in various workplace situations. You will be comfortable with operating a personal computer for basic work tasks.

After completing 11 units of work, you will be awarded a nationally accredited qualification, FSK10113 Certificate I in Access to Vocational Pathways. This accredited course gives you the skills to participate in further study in preparation for employment and study participation.

Students will undertake an initial assessment of language, literacy and numeracy skills to ensure that this course is suitable for their ability levels.

Fees and Government Subsidy Opportunities

Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It’s helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers.

Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with:

  • An entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III.
  • Government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.

This training is subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. This criteria will determine your exact fee. Students who meet additional specified criteria, may be eligible for a concession fee or a fee exemption. In claiming the concession or exemption students will be required to supply the required evidence to support the claim in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

Students who are eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and/or credit transfer from previous study will have their fee adjusted to reflect this. The amended fee will be confirmed by Training Services NSW and will be reflected in the adjusted Student Fee Statement.

Payment Plans are available through Macquarie Community College for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications. 10% deposit is required upon enrolment followed by an interest-free payment plan. Payment methods: EFTPOS, Direct Deposit, Direct Debit, Visa or MasterCard.

Study Load

This course will include both classroom based sessions and home study.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined in the AQF as follows:

  • Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

This is underpinned by the AQF definition of credit as follows:

  • Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications.
  • Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:

  • Meet the requirements of the relevant training package or accredited course, and
  • Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
  • Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.

For this course assessment will entail the following:

  • Assessment methods include written and oral tasks, practical tasks and observation by the assessor. You will be informed when assessments are to take place.

What Can I Study Next?

After completing this study, you can complete FSK10213 Certificate II Skills for Vocational Pathways, specific industry based English for Work and Study courses, Australian spoken English and Pronunciation courses or English Reading and Writing Skills courses.
