Writing Your Family History – Sydney Course

Have you ever wondered about your family’s roots? If you have watched the popular TV show, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, or read genealogy books and websites, you may find it interesting to research about your family. However, crafting your findings or your own life story into a format others will want to read is the real challenge!

In this fun and informative workshop, you will learn how to master writing about your family history in a memoir or biographical format. You will become familiar with researching and interviewing skills, how to organise your material, how to structure a book and make it interesting for the reader and how to format and publish your work.

Online learning for this course is at scheduled class times and sessions. It could include:

  • Livestream video classes online;
  • Interaction with your tutor and other students during livestream video sessions;
  • Group exercises, group discussion, reading dialogue, written exercises, and games to practice new learned skills in an enjoyable way.

Please note: You will need access to the internet and a smartphone, tablet, computer or laptop in order to participate in the livestream video classes.

In this Writing Your Family History workshop you will learn the following:

  • researching and interviewing skills
  • how to organise your material
  • how to structure a book
  • how to make it interesting for the reader
  • what your formatting and publishing options are
  • how to handle family secrets
  • editing and proofreading skills
  • how to write using all your senses and perspectives
  • some ideas for launching and marketing your history

Course Outcome

By the commpletion of this Writing Your Family History workshop, you will be able to understand:

  • The purpose of writing your family history
  • How to determine who is your prospective reader
  • How to craft the facts of your history is it easily readable.
