Jazz Guitar – Beginners

This course paves the way to the exciting world of Jazz guitar. Building upon your knowledge of basic guitar chords and an ability to play simple melodies, you will be able to play Jazz guitar in no time!

In this course, you will learn the fundamental aspects of Jazz; Jazz chords, chord comping, Jazz soloing and Jazz licks. Unlike traditionally dry and confusing Jazz methods, this course provides an enjoyable step- by-step approach to learning to play Jazz guitar.

Remote learning for this course is at scheduled class times and sessions. It could include:

  • Livestream video classes online;
  • Interaction with your tutor and other students during livestream video sessions;
  • Group exercises, group discussion, reading dialogue, written exercises, and games to practice new learned skills in an enjoyable way.

Course Outcome

In this course you will:

  • learn basic jazz chord changes
  • learn jazz standard tunes and to be able to comp and play an effective solo over the chord changes
  • play and know how to use Mixolydian, harmonic, and melodic minor scales, the bebop scale, and the pentatonic scale

Prerequisite: Essential

  • Basic knowledge of chords, or previous attendance in a Beginners/Introductory guitar course is highly recommended. Students should already be able to play short, simple melodies.

Delivery Mode

  • Material will be presented using a combination of written and played musical examples. Students will play individually and in small groups. Feedback will be provided individually and to the group as a whole.
