Pattern Making – Everything You Need to Know – Sydney Course

This is a course designed to teach you how to create your own fashion designs and turn them into patterns you would love to make. You will learn how to measure a body, draft your own block patterns and construct a toile, a sample of the garment, for an accurate fit.

Course Outline

The course will cover:

  • Week 1: Measurement and basic block
  • Week 2: Skirt basic drafting
  • Week 3: Using basic block to make a one piece dress pattern
  • Week 4: Cutting, hand-sewing and fitting of a one piece dress
  • Week 5: Special pants drafting and cutting
  • Week 6: Pants fitting and detail drafting for collars and sleeves
  • Week 7: Basic design drafting
  • Week 8: Creating your own garment design using methods and techniques learnt in the course

It is intended that by the end of this course, students will be able to draft and then sew their own block patterns to suit their body shape.

Prerequisite: Essential

  • Students will need to have a basic knowledge of sewing.

Delivery Mode

  • The course will involve a combination of teacher demonstrations and practical work by students.

Materials Provided

  • Students will be provided with course notes. Drafting paper and a french curve is available to purchase from the tutor.
