Dressmaking – Intermediate to Advanced Sewing – Sydney Course

The Dressmaking Intermediate to Advanced Sewing course is designed for the sewer who wants to learn the finer skills of dressmaking using more complex commercial patterns.

You will learn sewing techniques, how to take body measurements, fabric selection, understanding pattern instructions and altering basic patterns for personal fit.

This course is also suitable for advanced sewers who want to learn how to fit more complicated garments such as dresses with collars, pockets and sleeves, tailored trousers, culottes, fly fronts, cuffs and jackets with welted pockets/flaps.

Course Outline

It is intended that the course will cover:

  • Quality equipment selection
  • Haberdashery requirements for sewing
  • Interfacings and linings
  • Appropriate fabric selection
  • What correct garment fits entails
  • Interpretation of pattern envelope information
  • Taking body measurements and determining basic pattern making alteration for personal fit
  • Understanding pattern instructions on the paper pattern and the instruction leaflet
  • Fabric pre-shrinking, lay out and pattern making/cutting
  • Machine threading and bobbin winding
  • Machine stitch length, stitch width
  • Basic sewing techniques

Course Outcome

By the end of the course, you will be more confident using different sewing techniques to create more complicated garments. You will have a good understanding of how to alter patterns to create a personal fit.

What to Bring

You will need to bring:

  • A commercial pattern (a more advanced design garment).
  • Fabric that has been washed in the way you intend to clean the finished garment. This pre shrinks the fabric.
  • Matching thread and white reel of thread.
  • Any sewing equipment.
  • Beryl pins, pincushion, tape measure, light blue waterless pencil, paper scissors.
  • Fabric scissors, roll of baking paper (cooking section) for alternations.
  • A4 plastic sleeve folder, to place notes.
  • Pencil and a 30cm ruler.
  • Hand sewing needles with a large eye for threading and sharp point.
  • Bring your sewing machines. Overlockers may be provided.

Prerequisite: Desirable

Students are confident in the use of the sewing machine and have some understanding of the commercial patterns.

Delivery Mode

The Dressmaking – Intermediate to Advance Sewing course involves a combination of teacher demonstration and student practical work.
