  • These courses are for people who want a short introduction to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Deaf Culture – at a relaxed pace.
  • These courses are held at MCC Chatswood, Level 1, 8 Thomas Street, Chatswood - for 7 sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during each College term. Please contact the Deaf Education Network on 02 8833 3600 to enrol in either Sign Language 1 or Sign Language 2

Course Outline

  • Improve your Auslan communication skills, further develop visual-gestural communication strategies, and extend your ability to adapt signs for use in different contexts. Pre-requisite: Sign Language 1. Taught by Deaf teachers only.
  • Sign Language 2 continues the unique and fun experience of communicating visually using Australian Sign Language (Auslan), the natural visual-gestural language used by the Australian Deaf Community.

This course is for students who want to:

  • Want to be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Deaf culture
  • Want a short course at a relaxed pace
  • Want to attend classes within their local area
  • Are managers, employers, teachers, health professionals, friends and colleagues of Deaf people
  • Are interested in working with Deaf people

It is intended that by the end of the Auslan Community Courses, students will:

  • Improve communication skills in Auslan
  • Further develop visual-gestural communication strategies.
  • Extend your ability to adapt signs for use in different contexts
  • Cover topics including occupations, suburbs, directions, families, time, appointments, countries and many more.
  • Develop an appreciation for Auslan
  • Access genuine Auslan with Deaf teachers
  • Develop practical Auslan skills
  • Learn through fun and informal classes
  • Gain a good introduction to sign language before committing to accredited courses.

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • Students must have completed the Sign Language 1 course.
