Singing – Vocal Technique – Sydney Course

If you have always enjoyed singing you can now learn more in a supportive and fun environment. In the first few classes of this course, the students will explore fundamental skills of singing and learn about vocal health, anatomy, proper breathing and diaphragm techniques, vocal placement, how to create an even tone and to practice learning a variety of music. The second half of the course will look at how to make better use of your breath, mixing registers and the concept of support. Returning students will look at improving chest registers, singing in harmonies, exploring songs requiring a greater vocal range and performance techniques as well as working out how to deal with performance anxiety.

Car Parking:

  • Free parking for three hours is available in the Westfield Car Park – which is directly opposite the Dougherty Community Centre in Victor Street, Chatswood.
  • A pedestrian crossing is available to cross the road to the Dougherty Community Centre

Course Outline

In this course you will learn:

  • Vocal health
  • Breathing for singing
  • Vocal anatomy
  • Vocal registers
  • Variety of singing styles – Music theatre, popular songs, 20’s – 40’s songs, folk songs, classical music (if class desires) etc.
  • Music theory and how to learn music

Course Outcome

  • At the end of the course, you will have an understanding of the process of singing, the different skills that are required and will have worked on your individual sound in a variety of styles.

  • Other Information: No textbook required. Comprehensive course notes provided.
  • A pencil, teabag and a cup for tea in the break.

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior knowledge of music or singing. Students with some ability are very welcome to attend.

Delivery Mode

  • The class is delivered in a studio room with 80% of the classes spent engaging in singing.
  • Parking available on site – and in council car park (free after 6 p.m.)
