Tech Savvy Seniors – Introduction to Skype: Part 2 – Sydney

In the first part of this course, ‘Tech Savvy Seniors - Introduction to Skype: Part 1’, we learnt about Skype, how to install Skype software and how to add contacts.

The second part of the course is a practical workshop that gives you the opportunity to get more hands-on experience with setting up and using your own Skype account. By the end of this course, you will be comfortable with using Skype to contact other Skype users.

Please note, this course follows on from Part 1, and will be putting into practice everything learnt in the previous course. It is essential that you have already attended Part 1 before proceeding to this course.

Course Outline

In this course you will learn:

  • Review of Skype (covered in Introduction to Skype: Part 1)

What is Skype and what are the alternatives to Skype
What devices can you use Skype on
How to use Skype to call any phone number (mobile or landline)

  • How to download the Skype software
  • How to set up your own Skype account
  • How to make a Skype call to another Skype user

Course Outcome

This practical and hands-on workshop will allow you to set-up and use Skype to call other Skype users and mobile phones/landlines. By the end of the course, you will be familiar using Skype and comfortable with contacting others using Skype.

What to Bring

  • Notepad and pen
  • An internet-connected laptop (computer), tablet (iPad or Android tablet) or phone (iPhone or Android phone). This device must have a webcam (camera).
  • If you cannot bring in your own device, you can use the desktop computer supplied by Macquarie Community College. Please note, you may need to share a computer with others in the workshop.
  • Your Skype username and password
  • Your handouts from ‘Introduction to Skype: Part 1’. This is a hands-on workshop where you will put into practice the work discussed in Part 1 of this course.

Prerequisite: Essential

  • This workshop is a continuation of Skype 1 class. It is essential that you have previously attended Skype 1.
  • Participants must be over 60 years old. Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and is funded in partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.

This workshop builds on knowledge covered in other Tech Savvy Senior workshops. It would be useful, but not essential, if you had attended some of the other Tech Savvy Seniors classes listed below.
