Thai Cooking – Homestyle – Sydney Course

In this introductory Thai cooking course, you will learn to prepare, cook and serve a selection of dishes using common household cooking equipment. You will use a variety of ingredients and methods common to traditional Thai cuisine.

Throughout the course you will experience the authentic flavours of Thai food, and cook classic dishes such as green curry, spicy prawn soup and Pad Thai noodles. You will become familiar with what ingredients to use and know your way around buying Thai groceries.

Important Information

  • Additional cost for weekly ingredients. Please bring $25 to first class (payable to tutor – to cover first lesson’s food costs).
  • For lessons 2-6, the food ingredients cost will be approximately $10-$15 – depending on where the students shop.
  • Please note that some of the ingredients bought may last a few lessons.
  • Tutor will also advise the students how to store ingredients for later use.

Course Outline

Topics include:

  • Dishes include: a selection of spicy and stir-fried salads, Green curry , Panang curry, Fish cakes, Tom Yum Soup, Pad Thai Noodles and more.
  • Where to buy the necessary ingredients
  • How to select and combine ingredients
  • How to use traditional Thai cooking techniques
  • How to adjust ingredient quantities to affect flavour
  • How to adjust prescribed recipes according to individual tastes

Course Outcome

  • At the end of the course, you will be able to prepare traditional Thai dishes in your own home. You will become familiar with what ingredients to use and know what Thai groceries you need to purchase.

What to Bring

  • $25 for the first lesson, payable to the tutor, to cover the cost of the first lesson’s ingredients.
  • For the second lesson onwards, students are required to purchase their own ingredients. This will allow students the flexibility to tailor their dishes to accommodate any dietary requirements they may have.
  • Sauces, herbs and curry base mixes will be available for purchase from the tutor if required.
  • Apron, tea towel, own knife (if required)
  • Pen and paper to take notes.
  • Container(s) to take food home.
  • Wear closed in shoes. No open shoes or high heels.
  • Basic cooking equipment (eg. pans) that may be required for the following weeks, which will be advised by the tutor.

  • No prior experience needed

Delivery Mode

  • The class is delivered in a non-commercial kitchen - through a hands-on approach, whereby the tutor will provide a combination of demonstrations and one-on-one guidance. You may choose to learn individually or form groups to cook together and share ingredients with friends.
