Ukulele Lessons – Sydney

The ukulele is one of the most versatile stringed instruments around and is an excellent vehicle with which to become introduced to music. You will be amazed at how quickly you will be playing the ukulele and see how easy it is to continue your progress.

You do not need to be able to read music. You will learn how to read and become familiar with simple printed Ukulele chord charts as well as learning a variety of strums and styles of playing. You will very quickly be able to hear the result of your efforts in playing tunes. A by-product of learning the ukulele is a developing an interest in and understanding of music.

You will learn a brief history of the ukulele and see the variety of ukuleles available. The ukulele is an inexpensive, travel friendly, fun instrument that can be easily learnt by beginners. Quality, pre-prepared ukuleles available for sale on the day. Please refer to ‘What to bring’ section below.

Course Outline

This workshop will give you the ability and confidence to play simple tunes and the knowledge and skills to continue learning at your own pace.

We start with the premise that you may have no previous musical background. We then examine the basic fundamentals of getting a correct start to playing. There is no need to know how to read music. We will learn how to form chords and strum to tunes. You will be playing tunes straight away and discover how easy it is to take your playing further. It will set you up for great musical experiences in a social setting.

  • Examples of the many makes, brands and structures of ukulele

  • Tuning the ukulele

  • Tunes in various keys and the chords needed
  • An understanding of the various chord groupings
  • The basic strum
  • Alternative strums
  • Your first song
  • Extending to other songs/styles
  • What to find on the internet
  • Where to further develop your interest

Course Outcome

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Play a variety of chords
  • Play in a few different keys
  • Play a few different strum styles relevant to the song style and tempo
  • Read song sheets written for the ukulele
  • Start playing a number of different tunes
  • Explore further ways to learn new songs and improve his playing ability
  • Understand the world of ukulele, i.e. artists, events, instrument availability, recordedmaterial, film, websites and club activity
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of how the ukulele can provide fun and entertainment

  • Course notes and tunes will be provided
  • Bring your own ukulele. If you do not have one, quality ukuleles are available from the Tutor starting from $40 upwards in a range of sizes, styles and timbers. These will be explained to help choose the right ukulele for you. These ukuleles have been pre-prepared, tuned and settled in, thus saving much time through the course.

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior knowledge of music.
  • The course will also build on any existing musical knowledge and fine tune it to the Ukulele.

Delivery Mode

  • Delivered in a small comfortable group size, with everyone getting the necessary attention.
  • There will be an emphasis on fun.
