Yin Yoga – Sydney Course

Yin Yoga aims to target or ‘stress’ the deep connective tissues around the body that surround the muscles, joints, and organs. Connective tissue includes fascia, tendons, ligaments and joint capsules. These fabrics need to be targeted to regain and maintain optimal health. If they are short, contracted and stiff, they need to be ‘stressed’ to regain their natural ranges of motion.

The practice in Yin Yoga is to guide a student to an edge, where there is a stress, but not to their ultimate depth in any posture. The student is encouraged to linger at the edge, but not seek greater depth. Time is more important than intensity. The poses are held for longer periods, around 3 to 5 minutes and they are passive floor poses that mainly work the lower body – hips, inner thighs and lower spine.

Furthermore the stillness of the body promotes quietness of the mind. The class has a calming and soothing quality to it. After a few yin yoga sessions a meditative mindset is developed as well as inner and outer flexibility.

Yin Yoga is especially beneficial to anyone looking for a deep stretch class, seeking pain treatment, trauma recovery or to complement other dynamic forms of exercise.

This Yin Yoga course is open to people of levels and is suitable for the complete beginner as well as those who have had prior experience in other forms of yoga.

Course Outline

You will learn:

  • Breathing techniques
  • Cultivation of a still mind and body
  • Relaxation at the end of each class
  • Basic anatomy concepts while holding postures
  • The importance of breathing and its link with the nervous system
  • Meditation visualizations and techniques to sit quietly and deal with feelings, sensations and emotions

What to bring

  • Mat
  • Water
  • If you have your own props such as strap, block, eye pillow and bolster, please feel free to bring them.

Prerequisite

This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior experience of Yin Yoga. Just a willingness to be still and hold postures for a few minutes.

Important Information

  • Students are required to sign a medical/information form at the first class.
  • If you are new to exercise or have a pre-existing condition, please seek information from their GP before participating.
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal two hours before the class. Please do not drink for one hour prior to class or during the class. Please have plenty of water earlier on during the day.
  • Ladies: For comfort, avoid bras with underwire for yoga classes.
  • Student’s health needs are considered and alternative postures are provided to meet individual health issues, level of strength, flexibility and fitness.

Delivery Mode

The class will be help in a classroom and the teacher will demonstrate the postures first then assist with any variations and props necessary so the student feels relaxed and comfortable.
