Smart and Skilled Funding

Smart and Skilled

Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It’s helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers.

Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with:

  • an entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
  • government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.

Under Smart and Skilled the Government contributes to the cost of each course with the student paying the balance. You can determine your eligibility for Smart and Skilled training in the Eligibility Checker. You can then find the right course and training provider, and get an estimate of your course fee, in the Course Finder.

Eligibility Check

Am I eligible for Smart and Skilled Funding?

You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • 15 years old or over
  • no longer at school
  • living or working in NSW
  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen

What type of courses will I be eligible for?

  • Smart and Skilled courses do not depend on your previous qualifications but previous qualifications may affect your student fee.
  • You are able to access subsidised Smart and Skilled training up to a Certificate III level regardless of whether you have a higher level qualification or have completed a school based apprenticeship or traineeship as part of your high school education.
  • You can also enrol in subsidising training at Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level, depending on the availability of funding for these courses.

Am I eligible to access Smart and Skilled as an apprentice or trainee?

  • Your eligibility is not affected if you have completed a vocational education and training (VET) course, including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, as part of your high level education.
  • There are also more exceptions to the eligibility conditions described above, such as for Aboriginal people who live in specific, defined areas outside the NSW border.
