What you will learn

Course outline

The Learn to Sew with Confidence course involves a combination of teacher demonstration and student practical work.

It is intended that the course will cover:

  • Sewing straight lines using your guide plate and curves
  • Seam finishes
  • Variety of machine needles
  • Inserting a lap zipper
  • Changing sewing feet on your machine
  • Using different types of fabrics
  • Machine stitches on your sewing machines

Course outcome

By the end of the course, you will have the ability to confidently use your sewing machine and the knowledge of the different feet and stitches.

You will have created:

  • A sewing machine cover with zipper pockets and opening for the handle,
  • A large pincushion and sewing machine mat to complement the sewing items.

What you need to know

Entry requirements

This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior knowledge of sewing.

What you need to provide

You will need to bring:

  • Sewing Machine and the electrical cord, foot control and sewing feet. However if you do not have a sewing machine please contact the college as we have Janome sewing machines available for you to use during the course.
  • Notebook or plastic sleeve folder
  • Blue or Black Pen
  • Lead pencil and a sharpener
  • Tape measure
  • Light Blue Water less pencil to mark fabric
  • Berry pins
  • 30cm ruler
  • Hand sewing needles, large eye to thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • 2 metres woven dressmaking printed fabric (no strips or checks)
  • 1 hobby fill small bag (1 only)
  • Two flat 1.5cm buttons to contracting the fabric
  • One 40cm zipper
  • Reel polyester thread to match fabric

  • Select the non-accredited short course you are interested in.
  • Find a day and time that suits your schedule.

Note: Enrolment is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Step 2 - Enrol and Verify

  • Click ‘Enrol Now’ after selecting your course and schedule.
  • Enter your details on the enrolment page.
  • Verify your email through a secure link sent to your email address.
  • Complete the secure checkout and payment process.

Step 3 - Receive Your Enrolment Details
