Introduction to Auslan 1 (Sign Language)

Course Overview

Auslan is the sign language used by the majority of the Australian deaf community. This fun and practical introduction course is taught by deaf trainers. You will learn to communicate visually using hand, arm and body movements to convey meaning.

This course is suitable for students:

  • Who want to be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and about deaf culture
  • Who are looking for a short course at a relaxed pace
  • Wanting to attend classes within their local area
  • Who are managers, employers, teachers, health professionals, friends and colleagues of deaf people and want to communicate with them
  • Who are interested in working with deaf people.

By the end of Introduction to Auslan 1, students will be able to use basic communication skills in Auslan and use visual-gestural communication strategies.

  • To develop practical Auslan skills
  • Through fun and informal classes

Course outcome

It is intended that by the end of the course you will be able to use basic communication skills in Auslan to communicate with the deaf community. You will gain a good introduction to sign language before committing to accredited courses.

Introduction to Auslan 2 is available for those students who have successfully mastered Introduction to Auslan 1.

How to Enrol

Step 1 - Choose Your Course

  • Select the non-accredited short course you are interested in.
  • Find a day and time that suits your schedule.

Note: Enrolment is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Step 2 - Enrol and Verify

  • Click ‘Enrol Now’ after selecting your course and schedule.
  • Enter your details on the enrolment page.
  • Verify your email through a secure link sent to your email address.
  • Complete the secure checkout and payment process.

Step 3 - Receive Your Enrolment Details

  • You will receive a course reminder email a day before your class begins.
  • For Online Zoom classes, a Zoom link and password will be emailed the day before class. Use the same link and password for subsequent sessions if applicable.
