Barista Skills - Short Sydney course


The hospitality sector is currently facing a skills shortage and a wide variety of jobs are available to people looking to start a career or get some casual or part time work. This hospitality course provides the knowledge and hands-on experience to enable people to work in a café making great coffee.

This short Barista Skills course combines the theory with the opportunity to apply these skills in a safe and supportive environment. Our students will experience a busy hospitality environment and get the opportunity to practice skills with real customers and operational pressures at a commercial Café run by Darcy St Project along with support and guidance of experienced staff and trainers as required.

The Barista Skills course is aimed at people wanting to gain skills to work in a café but could also be applied to other workplaces, volunteer opportunities or any environment where espresso coffee is served.

Course Outline

Students will gain the knowledge in a classroom environment and then get the opportunity to apply this knowledge and practice a range of skills in a real-life working environment at a commercial Café run by Darcy St Project with the support of industry mentors.

Students will learn about the requirements of a commercial café environment including;

  • Food safety requirements and practices
  • How to make great coffee

Course Outcome

Students will gain a thorough understanding of coffee varieties and techniques and have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice through hands on experience in a commercial hospitality environment under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Students will learn;

  • Food handling practices
  • How to make a range of espresso coffees
  • How to work quickly without impacting on the quality of the product

At the end of the course, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment where competency has been achieved.

Prerequisite:  Essential

An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills are required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process. Students in this course will be required to have English communication skills at the Intermediate level.

The duties in the workplace require staff to be on their feet and working in fast moving environments so a basic level of health and fitness is required.

SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety is a prerequisite for SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee. This unit will be delivered in this course to meet the requirements.

The NSW Government’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Program provides additional support to disadvantaged students who have barriers to studying a full qualification. The ACE Program aims to promote access and increase vocational education and training outcomes for those who experience significant barriers to training and employment.

This may include students who are:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
  • living with a disability
  • long-term unemployed
  • Commonwealth welfare recipients and their dependants
  • migrants/refugees who are unemployed or underemployed
  • experiencing other barriers to the Smart and Skilled entitlement program
  • living in regional and remote communities where training under the Smart and Skilled entitlement program cannot easily be accessed

Study Load

This course involves 4 days of classroom-based learning and at least 8 hours of work placement.

 Some additional self-paced study will be required outside of the class. We recommend students plan for the same amount of self-paced learning as they have in the classroom but the actual time required will depend on each students prior skills and experience of the industry and prior educational background.

Credit Transfers and Recognition of prior learning

Credit transfer (CT) is defined in the AQF as follows:
Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined in the AQF as follows:

  • Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

This is underpinned by the AQF definition of credit as follows:

  • Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications.
  • Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

Career Opportunities

This course provides basic skills and some hands on workplace experience that will enable students to gain employment in entry level positions in cafes, restaurants and clubs.

How will you be assessed

Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:

  • Meet the requirements of the relevant training package or accredited course, and
  • Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
  • Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.

For this course assessment will entail the following:

  • Written assessments and/or verbal assessments;
  • Practical simulation and group role play;
  • Work placement practical skills and observations assessment.

You will be informed when assessments are to take place.

What Can I study next?

Upon completion of this course, you can study Introduction to Hospitality or SIT20322 Certificate II in Hospitality.

 The Barista Skills is available in the following learning modes:

Classroom based combined with on the job work experience: experienced and engaging trainers will take you through the course material face to face with an individual assessment for each unit of competency and a variety of delivery modes to ensure individual learning styles are catered for.

Classroom learning for this course includes:

Important Information

Students will complete at least 8 hours of work placement in a commercial café where they have the opportunity to gain practical skills under the guidance of industry mentors.

Work placement will be arranged by MCC in one of the Darcy St Project commercial café’s run by an industry partner. Students will have the opportunity to select suitable shifts but will need to complete the required hours and be assessed in the work place to complete this course.
