Join us for a captivating journey into the world of traditional folk art and its modern applications, tailored for both beginners and advanced painters.
Tracing back to the origins of folk art, which began centuries ago you will learn traditional techniques, motifs, the historical significance of folk art and its evolution into contemporary art forms.
From beginners to advanced painters, all students are guided through these traditional folk art methods, offering a progressive learning experience. While beginners grasp the foundational techniques, advanced painters have the opportunity to apply this knowledge to create modern artworks on canvas.
Throughout the sessions, students will explore a diverse range of subjects, including floral motifs, patterns and designs. They will also learn how to adapt these techniques to contemporary painting styles, encouraging personal expression and innovation.
This course is designed to cater to individuals at all skill levels, offering a holistic view of the evolution of folk art techniques and their versatility in the realm of modern artistic expressions.

What you will learn
Course outline
In this course:
- Beginners follow a set structured course covering the basics of painting folk art including, brush use and care, colour mixing and application (including faux finishes, shading and highlighting, blended backgrounds), how to set up, paint and complete a painting, follow demonstrations, use notes and samples to paint and varnish.
- Beginners will learn styles such as Bauernmalerei, rustic country style fruit, 3D teddy bears and American decorative art.
- For advanced and continuing students, the paintings offered for inspiration change each term. Students can choose from the tutor's designs or their own to paint a wide range of stylised or realistic projects on wood, furniture, or canvas. Styles may include florals, still-life, seasonal pieces, painting for children, landscapes, or reproducing Art Nouveau and Old Masters using the folk art techniques.
- Everyone works at their own pace and will receive practical help and guidance with progress.
Course outcome
- After completing this eight week course, beginners will have a very good grounding in folk art technique, have produced five works, and feel confident about undertaking more challenging and ambitious works.
- Advanced and continuing students will grow in their painting ability and confidence with each new painting.

Entry requirements
No artistic ability or prior painting experience in any mode is required.
What you need to provide
- Please bring an old bath towel, pair of scissors and a packet of cheap disposable plastic plates.
- $96 beginner's kits supplied, payable in cash to tutor at the first class.
Other information
- Beginners have one-on-one instruction in a classroom setting.
- Advanced and continuing students can choose what to paint, whether to use wood or canvas and will work at their own pace with full notes and colour instructions, designs and demonstrations. Students may alter designs and colours or design and draw their own, prepare paintings at home or do everything at class, and decide how many paintings they wish to produce.
