If you’re interested in getting more out of your pictures than just snaps from a Smart-Phone or Compact – then this course is for you. Designed for users of DSLR (or Mirrorless SLR) cameras, this course will provide a comprehensive explanation of how to get the most from these cutting-edge cameras to execute on your creative vision. The Photography- Introduction course is suitable for beginners and intermediates, as well as those looking to do a refresh of prior learning.

Important Information

  • There is a Saturday or Sunday excucrsion to the Blue Mountains – the date of which will be discussed and agreed during the first class – incluidng a mid-week evening excursion to Dawes Point, in the CBD.
  • Students are expected to make their own way to each excursion – but are welcome to bring a companion to assist them with their equipment etc.
  • The excursions are weather dependant – and will be cancelled in the event of moderate rain. Your tutor will advise specific details on how this is communicated.
  • Location for Dawes Point Excursion: Hickson Road Reserve, The Rocks
  • Location for Blues Mountains Excursion: Jamison Lookout, Wentworth Falls

Additional Information

  • Saturday or Sunday excursion to Blue Mountains includes a moderate (i.e. 1.5km, 92m change in elevation, 45 min return trip, some steps, no ladders) walk from The Falls picnic area to Queen’s Cascades
  • Evening excursion to Dawes Point is normally scheduled for week 4 of the course
  • Saturday or Sunday excursion to Wentworth Falls is normally scheduled between weeks 4 and 5

Course Outline

Comprehensive overview of the Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera and how to get the most from it. Topics include; SLR operation and control, exposure, focus, composition, as well as the ‘silver bullets’ needed for successful travel, landscape, portrait, close-up, event, and sport photography. Four x 2.5 hour classroom sessions complemented by two x 3 hour external excursions – one of which will be a Sunday morning.

Topics include:

  • Operation and controls
  • Exposure, focus, composition, timing, perspective
  • The ‘silver bullets’ needed for successful travel, landscape, portrait, close-up, event, family, and sport photography
  • Digital aspects; including image sizing, B&W, saving to computer, RAW conversion, and basic editing
  • Photography methodology – simple steps to ensure the capture of great pictures – every time
  • One week-night excursion to the City (Dawes Point)
  • One weekend morning excursion to the Blue Mountains (Wentworth Falls)
  • Class-room familiarisation and operation of SLR camera

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, you will have more confidence in using your DSLR (or Mirrorless SLR) camera to capture your creative thoughts and ideas

What to Bring

  • Digital camera supporting interchangeable lenses (DSLR or Mirrorless) and at least one lens to every class
  • Tripod for excursions. Don’t forget the quick release plate if borrowing!
  • Recording media (memory cards)
  • Batteries for camera
  • A pencil torch is handy for the evening excursion.
  • Appropriate and comfortable clothing/footwear for excursions.
  • Personal hydration for weekend excursion
* A computer/Ipad is not mandatory, but will assist with getting the most from the learning. The computer can stay at home – it’s not required for classes.

Prerequisite: Desirable

Knowledge: The learning supports novices as well as intermediate. Prior photography learning is not required.

Delivery Mode

  • Four weeks of classroom theory (with small practical elements) complemented by two external excursions of hands-on nature with regular one-on-one tutor guidance.
  • Classroom (4 sessions): 2.5 hours each (6:30 pm to 9:00pm).
  • Excursions (2 sessions): 3 hours each (6:30 pmto 9:30 pm for The Rocks, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for Wentworth Falls).
  • Total learning: 16 hours.
