Course Overview

Never lose a document on your computer again! In this Tech Savvy Seniors – Computer Functions (Files & Folders) course, you will learn how to save your work on the computer drive, create files and folders and how to copy and move files and folders around.

You will also learn about USB drives and hard disk drives so that you can back up the files on your PC so that you never lose an important document or precious photo again!

What you will learn

Course outline

In this workshop you will:

Learn about files and folders:

  • What is a file and what is a folder?
  • What is the difference between a file and folder?
  • How to create a new folder?
  • What folders do you have on your Windows 10 PC or laptop?
  • If the default disc drive starts with the letter C then what happened to the A: and B: drives?
  • What happens when you put in a USB disk drive or a hard disk drive?

Moving and copying

  • What’s the difference between moving a file and copying a file?
  • Learn three different ways to move or copy files.
  • Learn the safe way to eject your USB disk drive from your PC and why this is a good idea.
  • Consider these skills to backup folders on your PC so you can secure your critical data.

Please note: This class will use a Windows PC that runs Windows 10 operating systems. We will not be covering files and folders on Apple Mac or smart devices.

Course outcome

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Explain why there is no A: or B: drive
  • Understand the folder layout of files on Windows 10 PC
  • Be able to safely eject a USB disk drive
  • Be able to create folders
  • Understand the difference between copying and moving files and folders.
  • Be able to move and copy files

Entry requirements

This class follows on from the Tech Savvy Seniors “Introduction to Computers” class. Students should be familiar with basic computer functions.

Prerequisite: Essential

Participants must be over 60 years old. Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and is funded in partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.

What you need to provide

Please bring:

  • Notepad and Pen
  • An empty USB disk drive
  • Optional: bring your own Windows laptop so you can learn about files and folders on your own device.

Step 1 - Choose Your Course

  • Select the non-accredited short course you are interested in.
  • Find a day and time that suits your schedule.

Note: Enrolment is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Step 2 - Enrol and Verify

  • Click ‘Enrol Now’ after selecting your course and schedule.
  • Enter your details on the enrolment page.
  • Verify your email through a secure link sent to your email address.
  • Complete the secure checkout and payment process.

Step 3 - Receive Your Enrolment Details
