This professional learning session builds early childhood educators’ confidence and knowledge of safe sleep and rest requirements in Early Education and Care settings.

Grounded in current legislation, recognised safe sleep guidelines, and best-practice strategies, the session supports educators to meet regulatory obligations while prioritising children’s health and wellbeing.

Educators will learn how to implement safe, compliant, and child-centred sleep and rest practices, including practical approaches that reduce risk and promote consistent routines.The session also explores how to develop strong, respectful partnerships with families, ensuring safe sleep practices are clearly communicated and collaboratively supported.

What you will learn

Course outline

This session will strengthen educators’ knowledge of safe sleep practices in Early Childhood Education and Care. This course is designed to:
  • Explore why safe sleep is critical for children's health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Review compliance requirements with a focus on National Law, Regulations, Red Nose Safe Sleep guidelines and Quality Standards that guide our practice.
  • Examine practical safe sleep strategies, including supervision, equipment, environments and individual child considerations.
  • Discuss tips for developing and implementing effective safe sleep and rest policies and procedures.
  • Consider ways to support families and share safe sleep knowledge in meaningful and respectful ways.

Course outcome

This professional learning opportunity will equip educators with the confidence and practical tools to ensure safe sleep and rest practices are consistently embedded across their service.

It will also ensure services are aware of the most current compliance requirements to support best practice.
