Course Overview
Would you like to feel more confident speaking English while meeting new people and sharing stories, food and culture?
Everyday English Conversation: Yum Cha, Stories & Culture is a friendly community English course where adults can practise everyday English through relaxed conversation, storytelling and shared activities. Rather than learning English through formal lessons and tests, you will practise speaking and listening in a welcoming group environment. Conversations may explore food, recipes, family traditions, photographs, memories, community life and cultural experiences.
A special part of the program is its intergenerational approach.
Older and younger participants learn from one another, exchange stories and perspectives, and build connections across cultures and generations. Older community members are encouraged to bring their experience, knowledge and traditions to the group while developing confidence using English in everyday situations.
Younger participants can develop communication, listening, cultural awareness and community engagement skills. You do not need advanced English to participate.
The activities focus on practical communication and building confidence in a supportive environment. If you would like to practise everyday English, meet new people and stay connected with your community, this course offers a relaxed and meaningful way to learn.

Course outline
In this course, you will practise how to:
- Take part in everyday conversations with greater confidence
- Listen, respond and ask questions during friendly group discussions
- Talk about your experiences, memories, family and community
- Share recipes, traditions and cultural stories
- Use practical English in social and community situations
- Communicate with people from different ages and cultural backgrounds
- Create simple written records such as stories, recipes or keepsake materials
- Use basic digital tools to communicate and stay connected
Learning happens through conversation, shared activities and practical experiences rather than formal classroom-style English lessons.
Course outcome
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Engage in simple social conversations with confidence
- Share information, stories and experiences with others
- Use everyday English in a supportive community setting
- Contribute to a shared group activity or keepsake project
- Build social connection through culture, conversation and shared learning
Participants may receive a Certificate of Participation or Completion.
What is involved
Time commitment
The course includes face-to-face group sessions with conversation, storytelling and practical community activities. Some simple activities may also be completed between sessions.
Assessment
This is a non-accredited course, so there are no formal competency-based assessments.
Learning may include group conversations, practical activities, short speaking tasks and simple written or digital activities designed to help you practise English and participate confidently.
What you need to know
Entry requirements
An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills is required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process.
What you need to provide
- All course material is provided and inclusive with course fees
- Notepad and pen
- For remote learning online Zoom classes students will need a stable internet connection on computer or laptop to participate.
Fees and government subsidies
The NSW Government’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Program provides affordable, local training and education to NSW communities. Under the ACE program, participants, employers, delivery partners and providers and the government collaborate to improve learning outcomes for learners and meet community training needs.
The ACE Program will also offer support to small business owners and their staff by providing fully subsidised accredited and non-accredited training in targeted courses in information technology, business services or foundation skills.
*Eligibility criteria apply. This training is fully subsidised by the NSW Government, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria.
Students will need to supply the required evidence in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.
