What you will learn

Suitable for beginners, the course combines practical skill development with an exploration of design and personal expression, enabling participants to create beautiful calligraphy for a range of creative and personal projects.

Course outline

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Introduction to writing with a pointed nib and ink
  • Introduction to this script style
  • Letter construction and characteristics
  • Study of form and spacing
  • Study of both lowercase and capital letters
  • Writing a body of text
  • Introduction to colour and design
  • Creating your own style

Course outcome

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Write with a pointed nib
  • Achieve spatial awareness
  • Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape
  • Create your personal style and apply to a small project

What you need to know

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this workshop. It is suitable for complete beginners with no previous calligraphy experience, as well as those who have studied traditional scripts such as Copperplate and would like to explore a more contemporary lettering style. Participants should have good hand control and an interest in learning calligraphy and lettering techniques.

  • Handout sheets will be provided by the tutor
