What you will learn

Course outline

It is intended that the course will cover:

  • Sewing machine basics e.g. threading
  • Sewing techniques and finishes
  • Fabrics and their uses
  • Fabrics and interfacing
  • Commercial pattern selection
  • Accurate body measurements
  • Pattern adjustments
  • Laying out fabric and cutting correcting
  • How to make an adult or child garment

Course outcome

  • By the end of the course, students will know how to use a sewing machine and follow a commercial pattern to cut and construct a garment.

What you need to know

Entry requirements

This course caters for all students from beginner sewers to advanced dressmakers. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.

What you need to provide

You will need to bring:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Tape Measure
  • Blue/Purple Waterless Pen
  • Berry Pins (total 50)
  • 30cm ruler
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Paper Scissors
  • A reel of thread
  • Large quick unpicker
  • A4 plastic sleeve folder for notes
  • 1 metric printed firm woven fabric for samples
  • Tracing paper, for alterations (6 sheets from spotlight in a packet.)
  • Polyester fill/ stuffing 500gm ( complete a pincushion).
  • Please bring your own sewing machine, however if you do not have a sewing machine please contact the college as we have Janome sewing machines available for you to use during the course.
  • Students will be required to buy a commercial pattern and a few metres of fabric of their choice at a later date after being given the recommendations

Step 1 - Choose Your Course

  • Select the non-accredited short course you are interested in.
  • Find a day and time that suits your schedule.

Note: Enrolment is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Step 2 - Enrol and Verify

  • Click ‘Enrol Now’ after selecting your course and schedule.
  • Enter your details on the enrolment page.
  • Verify your email through a secure link sent to your email address.
  • Complete the secure checkout and payment process.

Step 3 - Receive Your Enrolment Details

  • For Online Zoom classes, a Zoom link and password will be emailed the day before class. Use the same link and password for subsequent sessions if applicable.
