Course Overview
Learn how to organise, save and manage files and folders on your computer in this practical digital literacy course for seniors. Designed for older adults who already have basic computer skills, this beginner-friendly workshop will help you become more confident managing documents, photos and other files on a Windows computer.
You will learn how files and folders work, how to create and organise folders, and how to copy and move files from one location to another. You will also explore how your computer stores information and learn practical ways to keep your important documents and photos organised and easy to find.
The course introduces USB drives and external hard drives, including how to use them to copy and back up important files. You will also learn how to safely eject a USB drive from your computer and why doing this correctly can help protect your files.
With practical, step-by-step guidance, this course will help you develop useful computer file management skills and greater confidence organising and protecting your digital information.

In this workshop you will learn:
- What files and folders are and how they are used
- The difference between a file and a folder
- How to create a new folder
- How files and folders are organised on a Windows computer
- How computer drives are identified, including the C: drive
- Why Windows computers traditionally use C: as the main drive rather than A: or B:
- What happens when you connect a USB drive or external hard drive to your computer
- The difference between moving and copying files
- Different ways to move or copy files and folders
- How to safely eject a USB drive from your computer
- How file management skills can help you back up important documents, photos and other digital information
Please note: This course focuses on managing files and folders on Windows computers. It does not cover file management on Apple Mac computers, smartphones or tablets.
Course outcome
By the end of this course, participants will have a better understanding of how files, folders and drives are organised on a Windows computer.
You will be able to create folders, move and copy files and folders, use a USB drive and safely eject external storage devices. You will also understand how these skills can help you organise and back up important documents, photos and other files.

Entry requirements
This course is designed for seniors who already have basic computer skills and would like to become more confident managing files and folders on a Windows computer.
Participants should be familiar with basic computer functions, including using a mouse and keyboard, opening programs and navigating a Windows computer.

- An empty USB drive
- Optional: Your own Windows laptop if you would like to practise managing files and folders on your own device
