Course Overview
Join our experienced bushwalking guide Greg Williams, who has been leading nature walks around Sydney for nearly 40 years. Book this walk individually or enrol in the Sunday Adventure Bushwalks Package, which includes four unique bushwalks at a discounted rate.
This relatively moderate trek takes in some magnificent views of the Broken Bay area including Lion Island with more views to the west looking down onto Dangar Island, Brooklyn and the Hawkesbury River Rail Bridge. On this trek you will discover the original power poles from WW2 that carried power out to the Juno Point defence post. Here you will see some of the remnants of a gun emplacement, bunker and ammunitions storage area. Juno Point had two 18pounder guns which were backed up with defences at West Head and Hungry Beach.
On the river upstream from Juno Point there were further gun emplacements at the Hawkesbury River Rail Bridge and Flat Rock Point at Brooklyn. Accompanying these river defences, a submarine boom net stretched across the Hawkesbury River between Brooklyn, Dangar Island and Little Wobby. Pittwater also had a submarine boom net stretched across its entrance. From the gun emplacement at Juno Point there is a clear view of Lion Island and the entrance to Broken Bay which gave our defence forces the opportunity to see any enemy ships attempting to sail into the Hawkesbury River which gave them a clear vantage point to defend possible Japanese invasion.
