Child Care Career to Community Impact

“I’ve always wanted to work with children,” says Sarah Hearne, Trainer and Assessor Early Childhood Education and Care at Macquarie Community College.

Sarah began pursuing her child care career straight out of high school. After completing her Certificate III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, she quickly secured a full-time role in a babies room – and fell in love with it.

Driven by her passion, Sarah completed her Bachelor of Early Childhood while working full-time. She rose through the ranks to Centre Director but soon discovered a new calling – mentoring educators.

“I developed this bigger passion and goal of guiding other educators.”

After having her second child, Sarah stepped away from floor work and moved into professional development and training. She created webinars, built online learning content, and eventually earned her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE).

That’s when she found her perfect fit at Macquarie Community College.

“When I saw Sue’s (Sue Bryant, Early Childhood Education and Care Lead Trainer) face during the interview, I knew it was meant to be.”

Helping Families Through Partnership: Steps to Safer Parenting

One of Sarah’s favourite programs to deliver is Steps to Safer Parenting, a free course offered through a strong partnership between Macquarie Community College and Junaya Family Development Services.

This program was co-designed by Junaya CEO, Valerie Karim and MCC Child Care Lead Trainer Sue Bryant. The main goal is to support parents in building safer, more connected relationships with their children. The course provides tools, guidance, and a safe space for open discussion.

“What I love most is that I’m helping someone, even in a small way. That fills my cup.”

The program runs onsite at Junaya each school term and has become a vital support for local families navigating the challenges of parenting.

Sarah shared a touching moment from one of the sessions:

“A parent burst into tears and said, ‘Everything I’m doing is for my kids.’ That moment stays with me.”

Creating Safe, Supportive Spaces in Child Care

Whether she’s working with parents, young people, or students, Sarah focuses on creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and supported.

“I work hard to build trust. When parents ask for a hug at the end of a program, it says everything.”

Sarah has even recommended future catch-up sessions at Junaya to stay connected with the parents she’s taught and to hear about their progress.

“Their stories stay with me. I can’t wait to see them again.”

Inspired by Real Stories, Driven by Purpose

Sarah’s work is deeply inspired by her community. A close family friend who is a foster parent motivates her to support both young people and families through MCC partnership programs such as YES – Youth Employment Services and Junaya – Steps to Safer Parenting.

“It reminds me how powerful education can be – especially in the early years.”
