Empowering Seniors with Digital Skills: Computers for Seniors in Sydney

In a world that is increasingly digital, staying connected can feel overwhelming — especially for elder members of our community. But with the right support, learning technology can become not only accessible, but empowering.

At Macquarie Community College (MCC), we believe learning should be lifelong, inclusive and community-driven. That belief came to life through our recent collaboration with the Maltese Welfare NSW and Llandilo Maltese Seniors Group, where we delivered a series of Computer for Seniors workshops designed specifically for senior learners.

Building Confidence, One Step at a Time

Led by our experienced and highly regarded trainer David Vasey, these workshops were anything but traditional.

Held directly within the community setting, the sessions were designed to feel comfortable, practical and engaging. Seniors brought their own smartphones, questions and curiosity — and left with something even more valuable: confidence

Participants explored:

  • How to use smartphones for everyday tasks
  • Staying safe online and avoiding scams
  • Communicating with family and friends digitally
  • Accessing services such as online shopping and healthcare

What stood out most was not just what was taught — but how it was delivered.

David created a space where questions were encouraged, mistakes were welcomed, and learning felt achievable.

From Uncertainty to Empowerment

For many participants, technology had previously felt intimidating.

But over the course of the sessions, something powerful happened.

Confidence replaced hesitation. Curiosity replaced fear.

Seniors began to see how digital tools could support their independence — whether it was booking appointments, connecting with loved ones overseas, or simply exploring new interests online.

”We appreciate all attendees who made the effort to join us. David once again delivered an informative and engaging session, and it was heartening to see our seniors actively participating and asking many questions.

A special mention goes to an inspiring 91-year-old lady whose enthusiasm for learning stood out — thanks also to her son for bringing her and for his continued support,” – commented Lawrence Gatt, President, Maltese Welfare NSW

In one session, David even introduced the basics of artificial intelligence (AI) — showing how simple tools can assist with everyday tasks. For many, it was their first glimpse into how technology is evolving — and how they can be part of it.

A Stronger Community Through Collaboration

This initiative was made possible through a strong partnership with Maltese Welfare NSW, whose commitment to supporting their community aligns closely with MCC’s mission.

Together, we created a program that was not just about learning skills — but about building inclusion, connection and opportunity

The enthusiasm from participants said it all. The sessions were filled with laughter, questions and genuine excitement to learn.

It’s a reminder that when education meets community, the impact goes far beyond the classroom.

Why Digital Skills Matter for Seniors

Technology is no longer optional — it’s part of everyday life.

From accessing government services to staying in touch with family, digital skills can significantly improve quality of life.

For seniors, learning these skills means:

  • Staying connected and reducing isolation
  • Managing daily tasks more independently
  • Accessing important services and information
  • Feeling confident in a digital world

At MCC, we see this transformation every day.
