Keep the Language in the Family: Learn a Foreign Language in Sydney

What language did your parents or grandparents speak?

Perhaps you heard it around the dinner table growing up. You recognise a few words, understand more than you can say, or remember phrases your grandparents used — but somewhere along the way, English became the language you use every day.

In multicultural Australia, this experience is familiar to many families.

Learning or returning to a family language can be much more than taking a class. It can be a way to reconnect with your heritage, speak with relatives, understand family stories and help keep a language alive for the next generation.

Why Learn a Foreign Language as an Adult?

There are many reasons adults decide to learn another language.

For some, it is about family and cultural identity. For others, it may be preparing for overseas travel, speaking with a partner’s family, communicating with friends or simply enjoying the challenge of learning something new.

Learning another language can help you:

  • communicate more confidently with family and friends
  • reconnect with your cultural heritage
  • prepare for travel and experience another culture more deeply
  • keep your mind active through lifelong learning
  • meet people who share your interest in language and culture
  • build practical speaking and listening skills

You don’t need to have grown up speaking the language. Starting with a few words is still a start.

Learning the Language of Your Family

For some Macquarie Community College students, language learning is deeply personal.

Stephen was born in Australia to a Chinese family. He is now learning Mandarin because he wants to communicate more confidently with relatives in China.

For Stephen, learning Mandarin “is not simply about gaining a new skill. It is a way to strengthen the connection with his family, culture and heritage”.

Margo has a similar motivation. Her parents came to Australia from Spain many years ago, and learning Spanish gives her an opportunity to keep that part of her family’s story alive.

“I want to learn Spanish. It means maintaining a connection with where her family came from”, she says.

Their experiences are a reminder that sometimes learning a language is not about discovering something completely new.

Sometimes it is about reconnecting with something that already belongs to you.
