Karen’s Learning Journey: Confidence Through Digital Skills

Meet Karen, a Computer student at Macquarie Community College (on image Karen is to the left with MCC Trainer Haih Aly).

“I am a person with an invisible disability, and I am learning life techniques and adaptive soft skills in an equally demanding and fast-paced environment.”

Her learning journey reflects resilience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to personal growth.

Karen returned to education to update her computer skills and stay current with quick technological changes.

She is completing her training through the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled program, which provides eligible students with access to subsidised training and nationally recognised qualifications.

Our team had a truly interesting and insightful conversation with Karen and we would like to share it with you.

What motivated you to pursue education at Macquarie Community College?

I needed to maintain and upgrade the level of my computer skills. I wanted to align with the rapid and increasing changes in technology and business requirements.

The course subjects are aligned with community and current business demands. The structure and content are very practical.

The locations of each college campus, Epping and Chatswood, are within walking distance of public transport.

Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your time at MCC?

This is a challenging question, as there have been many memorable moments in the past, and I know there will be more during my time at MCC.

There have been several occasions when I left for the day feeling that “I am on top of the world!”
I even had a happy cry because I felt so proud of myself. I truly felt that the day was productive, effective, and harmonious.

Did MCC impact your personal growth and confidence?

Oh yes, MCC team indeed is making a real difference to my personal growth.

I have developed empathy and now listen carefully, pushing aside my personal judgements.

In my class I feel more confident and this goes hand in hand with growth in my mindset. I am also more comfortable moving away from traditional learning modes.

Have you developed any new skills or interests during your time here? If so, what are they?

I call them new people skills. These include emotional intelligence, active listening, and conflict resolution.

I have also improved my communication skills — non-verbal, such as hand signals; written communication, including clarity and tone; and verbal communication.

My trainer Haih helped me to significantly developed self-awareness — the ability to quickly identify my strengths, weaknesses, and over-strengths.
Moreover, I have become more receptive and reflective.

Do you have any advice for other students considering adult education?

Adult education will not only change you, but it is a dynamic cycle of Focus, Achieve and Repeat.  Explore and challenge yourself.
