Meet Richard, a Macquarie Community College Computer student and a proud Dad of two daughters. He had worked in many roles – starting in banking, then moving into truck driving and deliveries, Richard wanted a new direction after years of hands on work. He was looking for a job that suited his health and supported his family.
When Richard searched for work, he noticed something straight away. Most jobs wanted computer skills. He knew a bit already, but he did not feel confident. He wanted to improve, so he could apply for admin roles and workplace office jobs.
That decision led him to Macquarie Community College.
Starting Computer Course for Beginners
Richard found MCC on Facebook. He liked how easy it was to apply and he felt very welcome from the start. Government Subsidised courses helped him begin without stress. He could focus on learning, not costs.
“I thought I should do it,” Richard said. “Because it is funded I did not pay anything. That support helped me to start quickly. It also helped me to believe I could succeed.”
Richard enrolled in the Basic Computer Skills at MCC Mount Druitt in 2025. He walked into class feeling unsure. He was worried that he might make mistakes.
“I was not confident at all,” he said. “I always thought I will blow the computer.” He laughed as he said it, but the fear was real.
The course changed that. MCC teacher Belinda started with the basics. She explained each step clearly and the students practised real tasks in class. That structure helped Richard relax and learn.
“We start with basics and then we learnt some programs and perform tasks,” he said. Each week gave me more confidence.”
Building Confidence with Workplace Programs
Richard learned computer skillss that employers expect. He practised Microsoft Word for documents. He enjoyed PowerPoint, learned to build presentations and also improved his Excel skills.
“I know how to work in Word,” he said. “I like PowerPoint. I’ve got better understanding of Excel. These skills helped me feel job ready. They also helped me to understand a new kind of work.”
Richard wants an admin role. He wants steady work that fits his health needs. He knows computer skills matter for that goal.
“I want to find the job,” he explained. “Any sort of admin job I can do.”
Moving Into Intermediate Computer Skills Course
After finishing the Basic course, Richard did not stop. He enrolled in the Intermediate Computer Skills at Mount Druitt. He wants to keep improving and get stronger skills for work and daily life.
“I will continue with my study,” he said. “MCC courses are very helpful as they show the power of step-by-step learning. Students can begin at any level. They can progress as their confidence grows.”
A Tutor Who Made Learning Easier
Richard spoke with real warmth about his trainer, Belinda. He said she helped him feel capable.
“She is very passionate,” he said. “She will come to your desk and help you. She will guide you to the right answer, she repeats steps as many times as needed. That support removed fear from learning.”
Richard came back and enrolled in the Intermediate Computer Skills class because of her teaching. He trusted the class and wanted to keep going.
Richard also loved the class environment. He said the group felt friendly and welcoming. He made friends quickly. They laughed often and helped each other learn.
“The class is great,” Richard said. “We are always happy to see each other.”
Richard’s Advice for New Students?
“Do not be afraid — just do it,” he said. “You will meet friends there.”
His message comes from experience. Richard started unsure, but he kept going. Now he feels confident using computers. After all he feels ready to take his next step toward work.
