Stephen Wells Reflects on Macquarie Community College’s Purpose and Promise

In 2025, Macquarie Community College proudly celebrates 75 years of transforming lives through inclusive, community-focused education. From its beginnings in 1950 to becoming Westen Sydney’s leading not-for-profit provider of community-based education and training, the College has continually evolved to meet the needs of individuals, employers and communities.

This milestone is not only a reflection of Macquarie Community College’s enduring commitment to learning and connection, it also honours the people who have helped shape its legacy. Among them is Board member Stephen Wells, who joined in 2019 and has since played a key role in supporting the College’s strategic direction and community impact.

With a lifelong belief in the power of education to open doors and build stronger communities, Stephen was drawn to the College’s commitment of making learning accessible to all.

“Joining the Board gave me a front-row seat to see how the College changes lives,” he says. “It’s not just about classes – it’s about connection, confidence, and community.”

A Legacy of Real-World Impact

Macquarie Community College stands as the champion of community education with six dedicated campuses — in Blacktown, Carlingford, Chatswood, Epping, Mt Druitt and Ryde. With 75 years of experience and a workforce of over 170 passionate staff, Macquarie Community College continues to grow in strength and impact.

“This organisation has been empowering lives since 1950 —proving that when people grow, communities flourish,” Stephen reflects.

From foundational skills such as English and employability to accredited vocational qualifications and community programs, Macquarie Community College empowers people from all backgrounds to create better futures, especially those facing barriers to participation in education, training or employment.

The College’s ability to deliver affordable, place-based, employment-linked courses is especially vital in addressing challenges like skills shortages, and education affordability. The College’s learners don’t just gain qualifications—they gain confidence, direction, and the tools to actively shape their futures.

Milestones in Adaptation and Growth

Stephen has seen firsthand how Macquarie Community College evolves with purpose—balancing long-term vision with a flexible approach to delivery. During his time on the Board, the College has navigated significant changes with agility and focus. From expanding the Blacktown campus to improving access in underserved areas, to embracing AI in strategic planning, the College continues to adapt while staying anchored to its community-driven mission.

The COVID-19 pandemic tested this adaptability further, prompting a swift pivot to online learning to ensure continuity for students. The College has also responded proactively to changing government funding landscapes, an area that requires strategic foresight and responsiveness.

“You can’t be too rigid,” Stephen explains. “Metrics matter, but the path to success can—and must—evolve with the times.”

Anchored by Vision, Led by People

What underpins this adaptability is a cohesive and values-driven leadership team.

“The leadership team has been together for over a decade. That consistency has created a depth of understanding around what the College is, what it needs, and where it’s going,” says Stephen.

With board and executive alignment, Macquarie Community College continues to plan for the future with vision – exploring models such as multi-campus expansion and integrated service offerings that can better respond to changing demographics, economic trends, and community needs.

The College’s Vision— Stronger communities through the power of learning and connection—is not just a statement. It’s embedded in every decision, every course, and every interaction.

A Human-Centred Approach to Learning

Stephen’s belief in the College’s purpose is as personal as it is professional. Having led diverse international teams, he understands the power of education in bridging divides and building understanding.

“What I love most is how the College helps people see each other as humans,” he shares. That’s what breaks down barriers, it’s what builds trust and possibility.”

Macquarie Community College’s commitment to inclusion is reflected in its tailored programs—from foundational skills and Adult Community Education (ACE) to Skills for Education and Employment (SEE), nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, and short courses for work, leisure, and lifelong learning. Whether it’s helping someone return to work, learn English, or connect socially, the College’s programs are designed to meet people where they are—and take them where they want to go.

Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future

As Macquarie Community College marks 75 years, it does so with the same conviction that shaped its beginnings—ready to embrace change and create new opportunities. In a shifting social and economic landscape, the College remains focused on empowering individuals with the skills, confidence, and support they need to succeed.

“The College’s strength is its unwavering commitment to people,” says Stephen. “That focus is what will keep it not just growing but thriving.” With a clear vision and a track record of delivering impact, Macquarie Community College moves forward with purpose—opening doors and driving meaningful change for Western Sydney and beyond.
