What happens when adults come together to try something new?
There is laughter. There is curiosity. There are conversations between people who may never have met otherwise. And, sometimes, there is the discovery of a new skill, hobby or interest that continues long after the class ends.
That was the atmosphere at Adult Learners Week celebration, when around 100 participants joined us at our Epping Campus for a day of free taster classes, demonstrations and community learning.
Adult Learners Week is an annual celebration of lifelong learning, and for MCC it is an opportunity to do something very practical. We work to make it easier for adults to step into a classroom, try something different and rediscover how enjoyable learning can be.
A Day to Try Something New
Our day started with a beautiful personal touch from Denise from our Customer Service team, who brought in her handmade flowers to decorate the campus. Almost everyone who passed them stopped to admire their beauty.
Throughout the day, participants took part in a variety of free classes and activities, experiencing firsthand the range of learning opportunities available through Macquarie Community College.
Some came because they wanted to discover a new hobby. Others were interested in developing practical skills, staying active or simply spending a day doing something different.
What they shared was a willingness to have a go.
For many adults, starting something new can easily be postponed. Work, family and everyday routines get in the way. Adult Learners Week gives people a chance to move past that first barrier and experience learning in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
And judging by the atmosphere throughout the day, our participants embraced the opportunity.
Classes were full of conversation, creativity and enthusiasm, and many people left the College in a wonderful mood. We were also delighted and grateful to receive kind words of gratitude from our participants sharing their appreciation for the classes and the experience our team created.
Why Lifelong Learning Matters
Learning as an adult is about much more than gaining a qualification.
It can mean learning how to use new technology with confidence, discovering your creative side, becoming more active, improving communication skills or finally trying something you have been curious about for years.
It can also bring people together.
At Macquarie Community College, we believe community education should help people learn new skills, build confidence, stay engaged and connect with others.
MCC has supported adult learning across Sydney for more than 75 years, providing inclusive and practical learning opportunities for adults from different backgrounds and stages of life.
Events such as Adult Learners Week are an important part of that commitment. They open the doors of the College to the wider community and remind us that there is no age or stage of life when learning has to stop.
