Returning to study after a long break is always challenging, especially when you are learning in another language.
For Maryam Yousefi, coming to Macquarie Community College (MCC) was an opportunity to start learning again and build the English confidence she needs for her future.
Maryam has lived in Australia for many years. She previously studied English at another college but then spent around six or seven years away from the classroom.
When she heard positive things about learning English at MCC, she decided it was time to return.
“I wanted to improve my English and become more confident communicating with people in the community,” Maryam says.
Building English Skills Step by Step
Maryam began with English for Work and Study – Beginner and is now studying Intermediate Spoken and Written English.
Her English training at MCC has been funded through the NSW Government’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Program.
The ACE Program supports eligible learners to access training that can help them develop foundation skills, build confidence, return to work or prepare for further education and employment.
Like many adult English learners, Maryam sometimes worried about making mistakes when speaking. Over time, practising in class and communicating with other students has helped her feel more comfortable giving English a go.
She has also made friends with classmates from different backgrounds.
Having other learners around her who are also developing their English means they can practise together, help one another and encourage each other to keep going.
Maryam says her teacher, Anna, has also played an important role in her progress.
She appreciates Anna’s patience, clear explanations and willingness to make sure students understand before moving on to something new.
English for a Future Career
Improving her English is not Maryam’s final goal. It is an important step towards something bigger.
Maryam hopes to become a dental assistant. Once her English reaches the level she needs, she plans to continue studying and work towards a qualification in dental assisting.
For Maryam, returning to the classroom after several years away has become what she describes as a new beginning.
Her advice to other adults who may be nervous about returning to study is simple:
“Don’t be afraid to start, even if you are not confident with your English. Just give it a try and keep practising.”
