For over 30 years, Elaine Witton has been sharing her passion for the timeless art of calligraphy at Macquarie Community College (MCC). Her calm presence, creative spirit, and deep knowledge have inspired countless learners – from absolute beginners to experienced enthusiasts – to discover the joy of beautiful handwriting.
Inspiring a Love for Calligraphy
Elaine hopes each student leaves her class with a sense of joy and achievement.
“I hope the students enjoy the art of calligraphy as much as I do and are happy with their outcomes, whatever their level of expertise,” she says.
Her classes offer more than technical instruction – they provide a calm, welcoming space to be creative, focus, and unwind. Students learn to create unique, hand-crafted pieces such as invitations, cards, quotes, and decorative art – all while exploring their personal style.
One of the most cherished class traditions is the creation of a calligraphy calendar each year. Students contribute individual pages, and the final calendar showcases a range of styles, scripts, and creativity. These calendars have been proudly displayed at the Carlingford campus, celebrating the talent and teamwork within the group.

Elaine’s dedication to her craft and students was recognised in 2011 when she received a Staff Excellence Award from the College – a proud moment in a long and meaningful teaching journey.
A Legacy of Creativity and Care
Elaine began teaching when MCC was still known as Eastwood Evening College. Her first calligraphy classes were held in a Year 3 classroom. Since then, she’s taught in many locations across Sydney, including Brush Farm House and Carlingford campus.
Today, she teaches online calligraphy courses, making the art form more accessible than ever.
“Teaching online works really well,” Elaine says. “I still see students grow in skill and confidence — even from home.”
As the College celebrates 75 years of community learning, Elaine reflects on the support and connection that MCC continues to offer.
“I’ve always found the College to be extremely supportive, accommodating, and caring — for both tutors and students.”
