Course Overview
This short course is an introduction to Celtic Spirals, mini mandalas, and Celtic Key Patterns, where every student is supported at their own pace within the group.
You are provided with comprehensive handouts that show each step taken in class to complete each Celtic Pattern.
By week 4 you will have the skills to complete a finished piece combining Celtic Spirals & Key Patterns, including the application of colour in your chosen media.

What you will learn
Course outline
In this course you will learn to:
- Draw Celtic key patterns using a diamond dot grid
- Draw Celtic key patterns in a border
- Draw Celtic Spirals using a compass and ruler
- Draw Celtic spirals in a mini mandala
- Draw Celtic spirals in a rectangular shape
- Outline your designs using a pigment marker
- Transfer your designs onto quality art paper
- Draw a Celtic artwork using spirals and key patterns
- Apply colour using your favourite media
Course outcome
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Draw and use diamond dot grids for Celtic Key Patterns
- Draw Celtic Spirals using a compass and ruler
- Draw and colour 2 different Celtic art patterns in 3 different shapes
- Layer Celtic Spirals and Celtic Key Patterns into one overall design
- Outline their drawn designs using a fine pointed marker
- Understand how to apply colour using their favourite medium
What you need to know
Entry requirements:
Course content is set at an introductory level. Experienced students will be given more complex artwork.
What you need to provide
Materials list for students:- Mechanical/pacer pencil + 0.5 2B leads
- Ruler, 30cm or longer
- Eraser
- Compass (Make sure it can hold its position without slipping)
- 0.4 Pigment marker, eg. Artline marker
- A4 Sketch pad
- Colour media, what you have or prefer to use: colour pencils; pigment markers; other felt tip markers; OR;
- Paints – water colours or watercolour gouache, acrylics.
- Empty jar, for rinse water
- Rag, soft & absorbent like t-shirt fabric
- Fine pointed round brushes no.0 & no.1
