Learning something new can feel challenging, especially when previous experiences have left you unsure of your abilities.
For Brianna, joining a computer course at Macquarie Community College became an opportunity to build practical skills, make friends and take meaningful steps towards her career goals.
Today, Brianna is developing the computer and communication skills she hopes to use in an office environment. Her dream is to become a receptionist, ideally helping students at Macquarie Community College.
Her journey is a reminder that learning is not only about gaining qualifications. It can also change how we see ourselves and what we believe we can achieve.
Learning Computer Skills from Scratch
When Brianna first decided to study computer skills, she had very little experience using computers.
She started with Basic Computer Skills to learn essential functions and become more comfortable using digital technology.
As her confidence developed, she progressed to intermediate computer training to improve her knowledge of Microsoft Excel, spreadsheets and data management.
These skills are particularly useful for office administration and reception work, where computers are part of everyday tasks.
Brianna now feels more confident navigating computer applications, creating spreadsheets and saving information, although she continues to build her independence through practice and support.
For someone who once struggled with basic computer functions, this progress means a great deal.
How Computer Courses Helped Brianna Build Confidence
Before joining Macquarie Community College, Brianna had experienced challenges with her studies. She sometimes felt shy, confused and unsure about completing her learning activities.
Her experience at MCC has been different.
Through classroom discussions, practical assignments and group activities, Brianna has become more comfortable communicating with others and participating in learning.

She describes one of her biggest personal achievements as:
“Coming out of [my] shy shell and making new friends along the way.”
Her classmates have become an important part of that experience. Together, they have worked through assignments, participated in group activities and supported each other.
One of Brianna’s favourite memories is celebrating her birthday with her class. Everyone came together to enjoy pizza, cake and photos.
It was a simple celebration, but one that reflected the friendships and sense of belonging she had developed.
Practical Computer Skills for Work and Everyday Life
Brianna’s experience highlights why learning basic computer skills can be an important first step towards employment.
At Macquarie Community College, our Basic Computer Skills for Work and Study course helps adults build practical digital skills for work, study and everyday life.
Students learn skills such as:
- Using computers and digital devices
- Creating and managing Microsoft Word documents
- Using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
- Sending emails and communicating online
- Searching for information on the internet
- Saving, organising and managing digital files
For learners ready to progress further, our Intermediate Computer Skills for Work and Study course develops workplace digital skills.
This includes working with business documents, spreadsheets, presentations and digital communication tools.
Brianna has particularly enjoyed learning Excel and data-saving skills. She has also learned about email etiquette, workplace communication and good posture when using computers.
She acknowledges the support of her trainer Sharleene, who helped her work through her classes and continue developing her skills.
From Computer Training to a Career in Reception
Brianna has a clear goal for her future: to work as a receptionist in an educational organisation. She would love the opportunity to welcome students, answer questions and encourage others who may feel uncertain about returning to education.
Her own learning experience has helped her understand how much a supportive environment can mean to someone taking their first steps.
More importantly, she feels she has grown as a person and become more confident about her future.
Her goal of working in reception is still ahead of her, but she is building relevant skills and gaining valuable experience along the way.
Brianna’s Advice to Other Adult Learners
For anyone considering returning to education, especially those worried about their computer skills or previous learning experiences, Brianna has an encouraging message:
“Anything is possible.”
She recommends Macquarie Community College’s Mount Druitt campus and encourages others to give learning a chance.
Her journey shows that you do not need to know everything before starting a course. Sometimes, the first step is simply being willing to try.
And with the right learning environment, practical training and encouragement, that first step can lead to new opportunities.
