Calligraphy – Copperplate – Introductory Workshop

Calligraphy is a fascinating art form that anyone can enjoy and learn. These workshops will introduce you to the elegant 17th Century style of calligraphy writing called ‘Copperplate’.

Using a pointed nib and ink, you will not only learn how to write this beautiful script, but also some of its practical applications, such as wedding invitations. This course is designed for beginners, and also caters for students wishing to refresh their skills. Materials available at first meeting (cost $15 – not included in course fee).

Course Outline

Workshop 1

  • Introduction to the calligraphy fonts called Copperplate and their historical background;
  • Learning to use a flexible Copperplate nib;
  • Writing the Copperplate lower-case alphabet;
  • Experimenting with a variety of letter shapes and shading;
  • Exploring the nib and line relationship.

Workshop 2

  • Writing the Copperplate capitals and experimenting with ways of combining the upper and lower case alphabet;
  • Exploring nib and line relationship;
  • Experimenting with a variety of letter shapes; and
  • Using these skills in practical applications such as wedding invitations.

Course Outcome

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Write a Copperplate script, using upper and lower case alphabets;
  • Write using a flexible nib and ink;
  • Understand how to produce basic projects incorporating these Copperplate Calligraphy skills.

  • Ruler;
  • Scissors;
  • HB pencil;
  • Eraser;
  • Drink, refreshments;
  • Tea and coffee supplied. Vending machine available at venue.

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • This course is designed for beginners, and also caters for students wishing to refresh their calligraphy skills.

Delivery Mode

  • The workshops will be delivered in a classroom setting. The tutor will provide a demonstration and will also provide individual tuition and instruction.
