Learn to Sew with Confidence – Sydney Course

This course is designed for beginners as well as students who need confidence in using their sewing machine or want to improve or revise their skills. You will learn the different sewing feet available and gain a greater understanding of their use. You will also learn the different types of stitches available on your sewing machine to complement the projects you will be completing in the workshop.

By the end of the course you will have achieved a machine cover with zipper pockets and opening for the handle. Small waste container for your threads and a large pincushion and sewing machine mat to complement the sewing items.

Course Outline

It is intended that the course will cover:

  • Sewing straight lines using your guide plate and curves
  • Seam finishes
  • Variety of machine needles
  • Inserting a lap zipper
  • Changing sewing feet on your machine
  • Using different types of fabrics
  • Machine stitches on your sewing machines

Course Outcome

By the end of the course, you will have the ability to confidently use your sewing machine and have a greater understanding of the different feet and stitches that can be used for different projects.

What to Bring

You will need to bring:

  • Sewing machine and the electrical cord, foot control and sewing feet
  • Baking paper, for tracing off the patterns
  • Lead pencil and a sharper
  • Tape measure
  • Light blue waterless pencil to mark fabric
  • Berry pins
  • 30cm ruler
  • Hand sewing needles, large eye to thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • 1 half metre woven dressmaking printed fabric (no strips or checks)
  • 30cm contracting (plain) woven dressmaking fabric
  • Two 1.5cm buttons to contracting the fabric
  • Two 40cm Zippers
  • Reel polyester thread to match fabric
  • 20cm Matilda sewing foam (can be purchased from Lyn’s Fine Needle Work, Baulkham Hills)
  • 40cm cotton wadding for the sewing mat (also from the above address)

Prerequisite: Desirable

This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior knowledge of sewing.
