Sewing Basics for Dressmaking - Sydney Course

This Sewing Basics for Dressmaking course is designed for beginner students and for dressmakers, wishing to further develop their skills. Learn all about fabrics and their uses, how to take accurate measurements, choosing correct pattern size selection and garment construction. The course will also cover how to make a garment more unique through the addition of embellishments or by slightly changing the pattern. This is a practical hands-on course.

Course Outline

It is intended that the course will cover:

  • Sewing machine basics e.g. threading
  • Sewing techniques and finishes
  • Fabrics and their uses
  • Fabrics and interfacing
  • Commercial pattern selection
  • Accurate body measurements
  • Pattern adjustments
  • Laying out fabric and cutting correcting
  • How to make an adult or child garment

Course Outcome

  • By the end of the course, students will know how to use a sewing machine and follow a commercial pattern to cut and construct a garment.

What to Bring

You will need to bring:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Tape Measure
  • Tailors Chalk Quick un-pick Pins – yellowhead
  • 30cm ruler
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Paper Scissors
  • A reel of thread
  • A small nylon zip
  • Sewing machines cannot be provided so it is advised students bring their own to class or borrow one from a friend for the duration of the course
  • Students will be required to buy a commercial pattern and a few metres of fabric of their choice at a later date after being given the recommendations

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • This course caters for all students from beginning sewers to advanced dressmakers. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
