In Part 4 of our Introduction to the Internet you will learn what the most popular internet web browsers are and when to use which browser. Dive into the most popular web browsers and learn how they can be better tailored to suit your needs.

Learn about search engines – what they do, who provides them and how to choose one. Discover what payment methods and passwords your web browser is remembering.

Learn how to use any web browser without leaving a snail trail of all the places you have been for anyone else’s viewing, as well as how to disable adverts and enable other useful extensions.

We will dive into Google Chrome:
  • Google Chrome profiles
  • Web history
  • Incognito window usage
  • Bookmarks
  • Web Windows – naming windows
  • Extensions – adblock
  • Settings:
    • Auto-fill
    • What passwords are being maintained?
    • What payment method does your browser use?
We will look into the differences between:
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Apple Safari
We will pay homage to past browsers:
  • Mozilla Netscape
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
We will mention the small-time browser players:
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Opera
  • Brave
  • Vivaldi
Learn all about search engines:
  • What do they have in common?
  • What distinguishes one from another?
  • Why change them?
  • How to change them?

Course outcome

By the end of the course the student will be able to:
  • Name the most popular web browsers.
  • Name what hardware they come pre-installed in.
  • Be able to tailor your web browser to your needs.
  • Know what a search engine is and know how it is different from a web browser.
  • Be able to change search engines.

Entry requirements

It would be useful, but not essential to have done the Tech Savvy Seniors – Introduction Internet: Part 1.

It would be strongly encouraged to have completed Tech Savvy Seniors – Introduction Internet: Part 2 or 3.

Prerequisite: Essential

Participants must be over 60 years old. Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and is funded in partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.

What you need to provide

  • Notepad and Pen
  • You can bring a smartphone / tablet / Windows PC / Apple MacBook to use the web browser that is installed if you wish.

How to Enrol

Step 1 - Choose Your Course

  • Select the non-accredited short course you are interested in.
  • Find a day and time that suits your schedule.

Note: Enrolment is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Step 2 - Enrol and Verify

  • Click ‘Enrol Now’ after selecting your course and schedule.
  • Enter your details on the enrolment page.
  • Verify your email through a secure link sent to your email address.
  • Complete the secure checkout and payment process.

Step 3 - Receive Your Enrolment Details

  • You will receive an immediate enrolment confirmation email upon successful enrolment. Check and read the attached Terms and Conditions.
  • The payer of the enrolment will receive a tax invoice immediately after processing.
  • You will receive a course reminder email a day before your class begins.
  • For Online Zoom classes, a Zoom link and password will be emailed the day before class. Use the same link and password for subsequent sessions if applicable.
